Dr. Markesbery

It was the cold Christmas eve of 2006 ! I was a novice Post Doc. in Nelson lab. I was out of rolls for some administerial reasons. That said, I need to mention that I didn't have a valid UK id card with me when I started working here in the University. I was running a late Western, and it was 8 'O' Clock in the night. In the 3rd floor corridor of Sanders-Brown, We have an old Kodak X- Ray developer, and I was developing the X-ray film in that. It was eerily silent and cold!. I could see a thin fragile man in black overcoat, with a leather bag, entering to my open lab. Suddenly I sensed RED ! I rushed to the front door of the lab and at that time I saw the man returning from Boss's room. I was even scared. He doesn't look like a robber! Who is he? I wondered! "Oh, I just wanted to say Merry Christmas to Pete", said he. He went home by six today, I replied. With hesitation, to answer or by my body language, I expressed my unfamiliarity with him. Oh I am Mr Markesbery, the Director of CoA (Center on Aging). Nice to meet you. I said. By the way, I am Bernard, the first Post Doc here in Nelson lab.

That meeting was short. Dr. Markesbery left soon wishing me Merry Christmas. I immediately rang Pete, and he was apologetic to me for not introducing me first to Dr. Markesbery. Luckily I didn't ask him who he was. If I would have asked him that, if I got that same return question- 'who I was', I would have been in deep trouble! I was even without an id card!

Later I was describing the incident to James and he used to mockingly call Dr. Markesbery THIEF, on his back, when he used to pass through our corridor silently. We all used to enjoy that joke.

Last Saturday, that presence of strength was taken from among us. He became more lovable to God! We really miss you Dr. Markesbery. No words can express our grief. Let me remain with prayers for his soul.
